Why are Some Dogs Scared of Fireworks?

Did you know that up to 30% of dogs are scared of fireworks? The most common reason for this phobia is the loud noise and randomness of the noise. Regardless, it is important to know how to comfort your dog during fireworks.

During 4th of July and New Years, you will most likely encounter a four legged friend is treeified of fireworks. Fortunately, for you and your furfriends, there are many steps that you can take to help your furfriend cope with fireworks.

1. Desensitize Your Dog to Fireworks

Slowly introducing your dog to simulated firework noise is a great way to ensure your dog will handle live fireworks like a champ. We have used multiple videos of fireworks from Youtube that can be used to slowly introduce and familiarize your pup with fireworks. Remember to start off with the volume low and gradually increase the volume.

2. Promote a Safe and comforting Environment

If you know that fireworks will be going on, make sure that your pup is in a familiar environment. It is ideal to designate an area like a large basement, closet, or crate if that is something that they enjoy. Once the space is finished, you should ensure that her favorite toys are present, as they can act as a great distraction. A familiar setting with familiar faces will comfort your dog during fireworks.

3. Play Background Noise

Leaving a TV or Radio on could provide enough white noise to help cancel out the fireworks. Find a channel or station that your dog loves or look for specific media that has been designed to sooth and entertain dogs.

4. Take your dog on a walk

The best time to go on a walk is earlier in the afternoon, which will be well before any fireworks start. The walk will be very therapeutic and will calm your dog before any fireworks start. It will also release some energy and anxiety.

5. Use a Thundershirt
